We also updated Airfoil for Mac to version 5.6.4 this week. Apple TV support was restored with Airfoil for Mac version 5.6, and this new version has some additional improvements made while working on Airfoil for Windows, including updates for tvOS 11.

The calculator below can be used to plot and extract airfoil coordinates for any NACA 4-series airfoil. The chord can be varied and the trailing edge either made sharp or blunt. Use the 'Show Coordinates' button to export the resulting coordinate points to a spreadsheet or text editor.

  • 6/27/21 - Added the Jochen Günzel JX-GS-04, JX-GS-06, JX-GS-10, JX-GS-15 airfoils -- a family of airfoils for building a complete wing for fast slope racing (F3F). He writes: 'Maybe the most remarkable aspect of these airfoils is their complete artificial design made with an enhanced version of Xoptfoil by Dan Prosser named Xoptfoil-JX (https://github.com/jxjo/Xoptfoil). Target of the design was taking special care of the turbulent situation close to the ground level boundary layer of the wind at a slope.'

    From XFOIL documentation verbatim: 'Some Fortran implementations will also choke on airfoil names that begin with T or F. These will be interpreted as logical variables, defeating the name-detection logic. Beginning the name with _T or _F is a workable solution to this 'feature'.' For instance, the FX 76-120 airfoil file begins with 'FX 76-120'. Attempting to analyze this airfoil (file) will create a bogus airfoil shape in XFOIL, e.g. as seen using the XFOIL GDES command after loading the airfoil. Renaming the first line to 'Wortmann FX 76-120' (or '_FX 76-120') resolves the problem.

  • 8/8/20 - Many moons ago, Peter Gasparovic provided a smoothed version of the RAF 6 airfoil, which he states is often used on propellers. The airfoil file name is raf6prop_sm.dat, and it is in the updates directory. He noted that he took 'the coordinates for 12% airfoil from NACA TR-259 and smoothed it in LE section.' The points are much higher quality than the original and suitable for analysis in , say, XFOIL.
  • 8/7/20 - Added three new 21% thickness wind turbine airfoils provided by Prof Joseph Saab: SP4621HP, SP4721LA and SP4721BS. He writes: 'We have developed a family of high chord-based Reynolds number airfoils for large size wind turbines, which are theoretically quieter than available profiles. They were developed with a modified BPM TE-noise prediction method we have incorporated into the TU-Berlin QBlade environment for wind turbine development.' The design Re is 7.7 million (with a working range from 4 to 9 million). The transition points were set at 5% for the upper surface and 10% for the lower surface. The SP4721BS is a bird-saving derivative with a calibrated TE thickness to induce a tonal noise to alert birds of the presence of the wind turbine and should be used in limited-span sections and bird migration affected areas. The new Saab-Pimenta airfoils SP4621HP, SP4721LA and SP4721BS are in the updates directory. The airfoils are described in the thesis from the USP (Sao Paulo State University) public archives here.   • 8/6/20 - Added new contributions from Francisco Espenica. The additions are the 5 marine turbine airfoils: IST-MT1-12.dat, IST-MT1-15.dat, IST-MT1-18.dat, IST-MT1-21.dat, and IST-MT1-24.dat. He writes: 'These airfoils result from an optimization effort aimed at increasing hydrodynamic performance while maintaining a low suction peak. The source work consists of my Master Thesis, which is currently in the process of being published.' The airfoils naming key is: IST - Instituto Superior Técnico, MT1 - Marine Turbine, and XX - 2 digits defining the airfoil maximum thickness. The airfoils have been added to the updates directory.

The root airfoil is the S4094 and it blends into the S4095 and S4096 toward the tip. The design Reynolds number is between 15,000 and 20,000. The airfoils include a blunt trailing edge to accommodate injected molded manufacturing considerations.
  • 12/20/12 - Added the LRN 1015 airfoil tested by NASA and sent in by Sebastian Maciejewski. Thank you! This airfoil is used on the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk, and it's hard to believe that it was only added now. It's been around since 1991 (Ref. NASA TM 102840).

  • 4/24/12 - Kudos to Keith Pickering for the Göttingen 765 airfoil coordinates (used on the Me163 Komet, the famous WWII rocket-powered interceptor). He generated the coordinates based on the original equations which he plans to publish.
  • 4/24/12 - Thanks to Tomas Melin from Linköping University for catching some coordinate point mix ups with the NACA 65(1)-412. The coordinates files have been updated, but (heads-up) these corrections have not been migrated to the zipfile download or AutoCAD .dwg files.
  • 3/30/12 - Al Bowers from NASA Dryden Flight Research Center submitted the Boeing KC-135 Winglet supercritical airfoil coordinates as designed by Richard T. Whitcomb.

  • 3/16/04 - Added these notes for Microsoft IE users.
    • Missing Links: Some people who use Microsoft IE have reported that the links below are not displayed. This is a Microsoft browser problem. If anyone has a solution, let me know.
    • Resized images: The new version of IE by default will automatically resize graphics images to fit your screen. The plots of the airfoils below are large and will likely be resized. In the IE Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced area, this resize 'feature' can be disabled if desired. Search for 'Enable automatic image resizing' under the Multimedia section heading.
  • 12/12/02 - Big Update. Added several new airfoils from many sources, and the version number was incremented to 2. There are now 1550 airfoils in the database. Dave Lednicer was able to track down a new Liebeck airfoil for the listing. Also, Lawrence Hur (UIUC undergrad) gathered up 250 or so new airfoils! I've also added many airfoils from Mark Drela and Martin Hepperle. The coordinates from Martin Hepperle might not match perfectly with those from before because he regenerated the designs to higher precision. Hopefully, I have not forgotten anyone!

  • 3/21/97 Added new airfoils: SA7035, SA7036, and SA7038 for R/C thermal soaring. These airfoils are based on the SD7037. Included tags A, B, C, .. for quick zoom to airfoil.
  • 3/6/97 - A viewer found a bug: 'The airfoil data listed for the LS(1)-0413 [GA(W)-2] differs from that published in NASA-CR-145139 in August 1976. The differences are greatest near the leading and trailing edges.' The file has not yet been corrected. See ls0413.html

  • 1/22/97 - A correction - The Wortmann FX 71-L-150/30 airfoil file (fx71l150.dat) was actually a duplicate of the Wortmann FX 71-L-150/20 airfoil (fx711520.dat). The gif plot for the errant Wortmann FX 71-L-150/30 was removed.
  • 11/13/96 A correction - The airfoil that was identified as the MS(1)-0413 in the database should be the MS(1)-0313 instead. This change has been made. The gif plot has not been change as of this date.
  • 11/9/96 - Posted some new airfoils to the Airfoil Data Site: bw3.dat, davis_corrected.dat, e231.dat, e476.dat, e477.dat, e478.dat, eh0009.dat, eh1090.dat, eh1590.dat, eh2010.dat, eh2012.dat, eh2510.dat, eh3012.dat, griffith30SymSuction.dat, s8038.dat (designed for David Ribbe's winning scale R/C MiG 15flickr pictures), s8055.dat.
